A revision of the Old World species of Leptopsilopa Cresson (Insecta: Diptera: Ephydridae)

Diagnoses and illustrations of three Leptopsilopa species known in the Old World: L. africana Cresson, L. mutabilis Cresson and L. pollinosa (Kertesz) are provided. Three new synonyms are proposed: L. aurata (Canzoneri and Meneghini) and L. tibialis (Canzoneri and Meneghini) = L. africana; Psilopa confeteae Canzoneri and Munari = L. pollinosa. Three other species are removed from Leptopsilopa and combined with Athyroglossa, as A. leonensis (Canzoneri and Rampini), new combination, A. mianii (Canzoneri) new combination and A. rossii (Canzoneri and Raffone), new combination.

The placement of the tribe Gastropini within the subfamily Gymnomyzinae, with the tribe Gymnomyzini as a sister-group, is supported. Validity for two genera Gastrops Williston and Notacanthina Macquart (senior synonym of Beckeriella Williston) is maintained. Particular characters of their proboscis, ventral receptacle and the male terminalia are presented. A key to species and habitus photographs of selected species of Gastrops and Notacanthina are provided. Two new combinations are proposed in Scatella for Ephydra australis Walker, 1853 and Opomyza guttata Macquart, 1843. Two species are resurrected from synonymy: Scatella lacustris (Meigen, 1830), revised status and Trixoscelis chilensis (Schiner, 1868), revised status (Trixoscelididae). Diasemocera Bezzi, 1895 (Type species: Psilopa nigrotaeniata Bezzi, 1895 [= Psilopa roederi Girschner, 1889]) is resurrected from synonymy with Psilopa and the following four new synonyms of Diasemocera are proposed: Domina Hutton (Type species: Domina metallica Hutton), Discocerinella Mercier (Type species: Discocerinella omonvillea Mercier, 1927 [= Notiphila pulicaria Haliday, 1839]), Trimerinoides Cresson (Type species: Trimerina adfinis Cresson) and Helaeomyia Cresson, 1941 (Type species: Psilopa petrolei Coquillett).
